His mother is recorded as his Next of Kin, living in Barton, Nottinghamshire. He embarked from Brisbane on 21 October 1915 on HMAT Seang Bee. He may have served in Gallipoli as the battalion did not evacuate to Egypt until December 1915. The battalion took part in many of the major battles on the Western Front and Private Gough was eventaully repatriated on 24 January 1918 with the rank of Corporal.
